On February 4, 2026, the Arizona Governor’s Office of Resiliency announced a $1 million investment in the Arizona Geological Survey (AZGS) to deepen understanding of the state’s geothermal resources and identify high-potential sites for next-gen technology deployment. The AZGS, which has more than 45 years of experience in geothermal research, contributes extensive expertise in subsurface characterization and statewide data development.

Governor Hobbs’ FY 2027 budget proposal also includes an additional $1.5 million for geothermal research to further expand knowledge of Arizona’s subsurface and support project development. As electricity demand rises with Arizona’s growing population and economy, next-generation geothermal energy offers a pathway to meet future energy needs while supporting continued economic growth.

These investments build on broader efforts by the Governor’s Office of Resiliency (the State Energy Office) to advance emerging technologies and strengthen Arizona’s energy system. As part of this work, Governor Hobbs is bringing together stakeholders through initiatives such as the Arizona Energy Promise Taskforce and a geothermal working group to align research, industry input, and policy in support of responsible geothermal development. Arizona has also joined the National Association of State Energy Officials (NASEO) and U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Geothermal Power Accelerator, a 15-state collaboration focused on accelerating geothermal power deployment in partnership with the private sector.
