Wind is the largest source of renewable energy in the United States and has three major applications: land-based, distributed, and offshore. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, land-based wind is one of the lowest-cost sources of electricity generation. The role of State Energy Offices in wind energy varies dramatically from state to state and depends upon each state’s particular wind resource, energy policies, and programs. For example, State Energy Offices may incorporate wind energy as a resource in their statewide energy plans, conduct wind studies or analyses, or help facilitate implementation of wind energy projects to help achieve particular state-level energy goals.
