The U.S. Department of the Interior has announced plans to implement emergency permitting procedures to accelerate the development of domestic energy resources and critical minerals. Covered energy projects include:
- Crude oil
- Natural gas
- Lease condensates
- Natural gas liquids
- Refined petroleum products
- Uranium
- Coal
- Biofuels
- Geothermal energy
- Kinetic hydropower
- Critical minerals
The Department will adopt an alternative National Environmental Policy Act compliance process; an expedited Secction 7 consultation process under the Endangered Species Act; and alternative procedures for compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. These measures are expected to shorten the length of time for review and approval of projects related to the identification, leasing, siting, production, transportation, refining, or generation of energy down to 28 days.
