On March 25, 2025, NASEO released a new publication, Managing the Grid: A Deep Dive into the United States Electric Transmission System for State Energy Offices. The report provides an overview of the transmission system and identifies additional resources for State Energy Offices. The publication describes the key engineering and economic characteristics of the electric power grid as well as the transmission system’s role; the federal legal, policy, and regulatory contexts; the need for transmission investment; federal and state transmission planning processes; and transmission and related electricity market issues by region and their implications for states.
