On January 2, 2025, the Colorado Energy Office and Department of Local Affairs Resiliency Office released the Colorado Microgrid Roadmap. In 2022, as weather-related power outages increased in the state, Governor Jared Polis signed the Electric Grid Resilience and Reliability Roadmap Act (HB22-1249) which directed the agencies to begin work on the Roadmap.

The Roadmap includes evaluations of various types of microgrids and recommendations of potential supportive policies. Additionally, the Microgrid Roadmap suggests prioritizing projects in vulnerable communities and provides criteria to support project identification. Through the Roadmap, the state outlines the benefits of microgrids including grid reliability, community resilience (especially in rural areas), cost-savings, and economic development. Further, it examines strategies for addressing microgrid challenges, such as cost, interconnection, and legal considerations.
